Hi I just got my copy of Guild Wars but I have a question. I am wondering if I should start off with a roleplaying character and then make it to lvl 20 and start pvp or if I should straight up make a pvp character.

Play PvE first to get a feel for the game and how the skills work. Jumping straight to PvP is bad for you because you'll lose a lot of matches and not have fun; it's bad for the teams you join because they'll have make up for the slack you leave them by not knowing what you're doing.
You have plenty of character slots, play through PvE with one character and when you think you're ready, make a PvP character. Then just keep both of them or delete the PvP character when you feel your PvE character has enough skills, weapon set, and armor variation to be able to switch to any desired build.

If you've just bought a copy and are almost totally new to the game, go pve.
Not for get a level 20 character, but al least to learn how the game works.
In PvP you'll face people with even 5/6 years of experience, which will do everything to destroy you and your team. And if you don't understand enough how stuff works, you'll be only a problem for your team mates probably.
I know some things are NOT the same at all in PvE vs. PvP experience...but if you do not know how to manage energy/keep yourself alive/be useful, you wont get so much from pvp(or will take longer anyway).

PvE-> learn stuff/unlock skills/mods -> PvP char-> PvP.

Try out PVE first. That way you know what the skills do. PVP is harder (imo) and more demanding.
Also, having PVE first helps you to unlock skills for PVP.

I would definitely PvE to unlock the majority of skills. However, as a way for getting the feel of the game and skill usage not so much. PvE gives people a sense of invulnerability and expertise in the game which is obviously not the case in PvP. There was a thread a few weeks ago where a R/Me PvE'er decided to play RA and then decided that the whole PvP community were hostile elitists because they wouldn't accept his bar consisting of mainly mesmer skills (e.g. Backfire, Empathy, Diversion).

PvE character. You can always PvP with your PvE character later on anyways. By playing PvE, you will unlock skills and equipment for any future PvP characters.

PvP characters are more for experienced players who have already beat the game and want to rush ahead to PvP on other professions, max equipment, etc.

Tbh if u make a pvp dervish u can almost throw on 3random enchantmenats, 3 random attacks and then you're good to go. IF you do pvp first which I advise against, make a Derv
